New Year, New Me, New Job? Try This!
With only a short time left in 2025, many of us are already planning for 2026, and for some, that includes a career change.
Some people would advise you to “change everything” in preparation for that job search, and others will tell you, “Don’t change a thing, make companies accept you as is!”
Here’s the truth: you don’t need a “head-to-toe” reinvention to land your dream job.
You need a strategic refresh.
Here’s how to subtly evolve your professional brand for 2026:
Reframe your story: Don’t Lie, Don’t Omit, but connect your past roles to where you’re headed. Make your resume and LinkedIn flow and say what’s next.
Update your visuals: Get yourself a new headshot. Invest time in updating how you word your background. Freshen up your overall aesthetic. It signals you’re current and intentional.
Speak the language of your future role: Swap passive language like “responsible for” with action verbs like “led,” “built,” or “transformed.” Words matter.
Reconnect with your network: Don’t ask for a job; you don’t want to put valuable members of your network in an awkward place. Instead, share your direction, your motivation, and your goals. Let people know what you’re exploring, and they’ll jump at the opportunity to be your navigator.
Invest in learning: No one is suggesting incurring the cost of a new degree, but taking one course or webinar, reading one article (or 5), or having coffee or a FaceTime meeting with one person from the industry or role you’re looking to get into can dramatically increase your preparedness and confidence. Growth shows up in conversations and interviews.
Reinvention doesn’t mean starting over. It means showing up as the clearest, most compelling version of you.
Let’s make this year count.
